Senior/Principal Ecologist

Job Introduction

We are looking for an experienced & highly motivated Senior/Principal Ecologist to join our successful Ecology team. We work predominantly in the private sector on a range of interesting projects including renewable energy, residential, logistics, education and leisure (and no HS2 work!).  we offer a range of training support to advance our staff careers and skills set.

We can be flexible on location in the UK but your nearest local office may be our Manchester facility.

Role Responsibility

  • Undertaking extended phase 1 habitat surveys/ UK Habs surveys to accurately describe and map habitats and assess their potential to support notable/protected species.
  • Undertaking phase 2 surveys for legally protected species.
  • Producing a range of ecological reports and reviewing junior team work
  • Designing and managing ecological surveys and associated mitigation.
  • Project Management
  • Liaising with clients, professional advisors, contractors and the general public.
  • Building and maintaining effective working relationships at all levels within the business, with clients, subcontractors and other third parties (regulators, statutory consultees, etc.).
  • There will also be opportunities for managing and mentoring junior team members if candidate desire.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant subject
  • At least four years’ experience as a professional ecological consultant.
  • Good ecological field skills covering a range of protected species and habitats.
  • A sound understanding of the legislative and planning policy framework as it relates to ecology and nature conservation.
  • The ability to write concise, high quality, technical reports in line with CIEEM guidelines.
  • Ideally, experience of reviewing technical ecology reports written by others.
  • Experience of using the latest Defra Biodiversity Metric desirable (training can be given).
  • Experience of writing fee proposals, project management and client liaison desirable (training can be given).
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
  • Membership of CIEEM
  • Protected species licence(s) or working towards licences (support and training could be provided for interested  candidates wishing to pursue their licences)
  • Full UK driving licence
